Work In The Field - Potatoes

Hello, Hive Gardeners! 👨‍🌾

This is my second post this year in the Hive Garden community. We started working the soil and preparing for planting three weeks ago. Now we have potatoes to plant.

The potato is one of the more critical crops in our country. If we look back in history, potatoes became important in our country following an order from Maria Theresa in 1767, who made it compulsory to plant potatoes to prevent famine. It did not take hold immediately; it took a few decades, but she was right. Even now, if there is a good harvest, it is said that we will not go hungry in winter :)

The soil had dried out enough for me to level it with the motor cultivator. We plant potatoes in a third of the field and usually have enough for the following year. Last year, the crop was less than the previous year, 10 crates, but I hope it will be more this year.

The green plants you see in the pictures are horseradish. I don't clean it; I just cut the leaves with a cultivator. The roots remain, and then it all grows again.

Horseradish is a highly valued herb in our country. The roots are used in sauces and dressings, and they also have medicinal properties. Having horseradish in the field means that the soil is clean, and horseradish does not like artificial fertilizers or other similar substances.

Everything is aligned, and I've gone through it twice with the motor cultivator to aerate and loosen the soil well.

Then I made rows with the plough on the cultivator. They have to be straight, haha.

Meanwhile, my wife planted garlic and onions, and our dog Atos kept everything under control :)

It didn't take long, about two hours, to plant all the potatoes, about 5 kg. Arrow and Adria.

📷 😎 📷

Then I used a rake to cover it with soil.

And what is happening with permaculture? We started this year.

We planted cabbage seedlings. They have come well, but something has already started to eat. Probably tiny snails, which are very difficult to remove :( I hope the cabbage will survive.

And, asparagus for dinner.

If anyone is interested in recipes with asparagus: Frittasparagus, Asparagus pie, Asparagus pasta.

What else is planned? Several seedlings are waiting to be transplanted. The weather should stabilise, and the soil should warm up a bit more. It will be soon.

Your great planting space is wonderful, I have always longed to have a yard like this at home. I can tell it's good soil and I'm sure the weather will improve and the magic will work itself out faster than usual. I hope one day to get out in the garden and have asparagus for dinner in my own home ❤️ Thank you very much for sharing 🙏

In our area, potatoes are cultivated in October to November when the weather is cold. It is harvested in late February and March.

If you have cultivated potatoes in your garden, what was the weather conditions and growing other vegetables is also a very good decision because fresh vegetables are available for the kitchen.

Good morning, Mr. @seckorama

Excellent work you're doing with the soil. It's great that the water has dried out, and you were able to level it properly.

Potatoes are one of those vegetables that shouldn't be missing from the garden. Your seeds look great. I wish you much success with this planting.

Permaculture seems to be going very well. I'm sorry about what's happening with the cabbage. I hope it survives.

What beautiful asparagus! Enjoy it.
