Unboxing Zoom AM7
Hello, everyone! π
Anyone who has followed me for a while knows I record videos of live performances with my phone. I used to do it differently, and more people were doing it together, let's say more professionally than now. Two cameras, one for the room and one for the details, record the sound separately from the mixing desk and then synchronize and edit it in a video editor.
I've been doing it differently for a few years: with a mobile phone, just one shot, almost static, and the sound directly into the microphone. And if we are talking about recording sound with a smartphone, this is the most critical point. Modern phones have a more or less decent picture, but recording sound, especially surround sound, in a closed room can be a complete disaster. Not always, but then the picture doesn't help either.
Without going into detail, I could try to improve my low-fi sound quality by buying an external microphone for my Smartphone. The one I chose cost around β¬100 in shipping. I had two in mind: the Rode Wireless Micro USB-C for β¬176 or the Zoom AM7 for β¬89.
I got it in a vast box :)

Why did I choose Zoom over Rode? When I read the comments and descriptions, it was obvious that they are up both there, but Zoom has a slightly better spatial image than Thde, which is better for interviews and such.

I plug it into USB-C, and it recognizes it?
That's right. My phone recognized it immediately. I can choose either the external one or his in the video recorder on my phone. Yet, when I read the instructions, they recommended using "Flight mode" to exclude all interference. For now, I will not download their app. We'll see where it goes.
The first opportunity to try it will be on Friday, at the Croatian shoegaze band Ε½EN concert, which I have already recorded once (2019).
