ThreeTuneTuesday - The Dandy Warhols

Hello music lovers! 🎵

It's Tuesday, time for #threetunetuesday, and a chance for me to share something I'm listening to.
My last post here was a week ago, and continuing with the music, I'm recalling memories from the past together with you.

Today I am presenting a band that is known but, in my opinion, underrated and deserves more attention.

The Dandy Warhols are an American band from Portland, Oregon. They have been playing together in an almost unchanged line-up since 1994, playing a mix of alternative rock and melodic neo-psychedelic in a classic line-up - vocals + guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and drums. The band's name is a derivative of the name of - you'll never guess, haha - pop artist Andy Warhol.

So far they have released ten studio albums, a couple of compilations, and quite a few EPs and singles. Their first album, 1995's Dandys Rule OK, wasn't exactly a success, and music critics spat on them, saying they sounded like they were on bad drugs. On their third album, however, they had a big hit, Bohemian Like You, which took them to great heights, namely, Vodafone used the song in their advert (and the band, and especially the writer of the lyrics and music, frontman Courtney A. Taylor, made quite a lot of money from the rights...). They also appeared as an object in the film Dig!, a 2004 documentary that explores the collision between art and corporate financial influence through the visions of two bands - The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The movie won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Regardless of all the fierce debates and conflicts that the band has been subjected to, I still think that the music is at the forefront, which this band has a lot of, regardless of the distribution method, the accusations of art betrayal, and so on.

Although I'm playing around with different styles and genres here, when/if you look and listen, the music in the foreground is actually very nice and melodic pop rock, and in the background, we have maybe the beginnings of EMO music, but also various woke or LGBTQ movements. Well, that's my subjective opinion, which is not necessarily correct at all, and of course, it's open to debate...

For those of you who are not (yet) familiar with #threetunetuesday or #ttt - these are tags you need to set when you post.
It's a music initiative started by @ablaze, and with his words, the jist is as follows:

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs that I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the reward.

🎵 🎧 🎤

So, to continue with the music, I've picked out a few clips.

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You

The song is probably their biggest hit, both in terms of reach and the money they got, and it's from 2000, from their third album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. A melodic tune, confusion in the minds and karaoke, fun while it lasts, just the right song to advertise mobile gadgets, especially to the targeted young population...

The Dandy Warhols - You Were The Last High

The song is from the fourth album Welcome To The Monkey House, from 2003, was released as the second single for the album, and was also used in the movie based on the computer game Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Maybe someone has played Tomb Raider?

🎵 🎧 🎤

The Dandy Warhols - Forever

The song is from the 2019 album Why You So Crazy and was also released as a single for the album. Inspiration probably came from signing to the independent Canadian label Dine Alone, where they have recorded three albums...

Well, let's have a bonus :)

The Dandy Warhols, live, 2003

Finally, a live recording from the Rock Am Ring festival in Germany, in the summer of 2003. Very good sound for that time, here are three songs I Am Over It, Godless, Boys Better. The black and white recording was at the request of the band.

That's all for today, thank you for your attention. I hope today's selection was interesting and put you in a relaxed mood like it did me :)

This is my 37th post for #threetunetuesday, which was started by @ablaze. I hope what I'm sharing is interesting for others too, because then it makes sense.

I can't even explain it in a plausible way. The Dandy Warhols play themselves right up to my ear - but unfortunately, they don't really go that deep. That is what happens occasionally. But they are not a complete failure, either. In America, they are doing well. 😎
