Three Tune Tuesday - Golden Brown

Hello, music lovers! 🎵

On #threetunestuesday, I reflect on the music I listened to growing up and the music I had access to. And when something reminds me of moments from my youth, I try to relive those memories through music.

But today is different! I only have one song, but in different versions. Maybe some people will find that strange — or maybe not :)

For those of you who aren't (yet) familiar with #threetunetuesday or #ttt: these are the hashtags you need to use when posting. It's a music initiative started by @ablaze, and with his words, the gist is as follows:

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs that I like to listen to, and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the reward.

The song “Golden Brown” I’m referring to is by The Stranglers, from their 1981 album La Folie. It was written by the band’s then-lead singer and guitarist, Hugh Cornwell, and is one of the band’s biggest hits. It features a baroque pop and new wave sound with a waltz rhythm, in keeping with the style of the entire album. The lyrics are contradictory and (according to the singer) have two meanings—heroin addiction (“golden brown” is street slang for high-quality heroin) and the euphoria that comes with it, as well as love for a girl from the Mediterranean who had a golden-brown complexion. The band says that people hear whatever they want to hear in the lyrics, much like in the Rorschach test, where they see whatever they want to see in the images. Well, regardless of what we want to hear and see, the song is a superb musical creation; it has over 30 official covers (source).

Here are some

Franz Ferdinand - Golden Brown (The Stranglers) (Live sur OÜI FM)

This one's still pretty fresh - I heard it a couple of days ago. And then I get an idea - I could do a post about covers of the song :)

🎵 🎧 🎵

Dave Brubeck - Golden Brown

This is a viral cover by English saxophonist Laurence Mason (not the original Dave Brubeck version), released in May 2020 on YouTube. It uses a 1964 recording of the Dave Brubeck Quartet playing “Take Five,” created as a tribute to Dave Greenfield (keyboardist for The Stranglers), who died in May 2020 from COVID-19.

Zephyr Quartet 'Golden Brown - The Stranglers' (BABYTEETH Soundtrack)

The Zephyr Quartet is an Australian chamber ensemble; their instrumental version—without lyrics, just strings—was featured in the film Babyteeth. Classical chamber music with a modern, hypnotic touch.

And as a bonus, of course, the original in Full HD (digitally remastered and upscaled in 2025)

That's all for now — keep enjoying the music and the summer heat!

This is my 90th post for #threetunetuesday, which @ablaze started. I hope what I'm sharing is enjoyable for others, too, because then it makes sense.

Honestly thebackstory behind the lyrics made this even more interesting. Whether people hear one meaning or another the song has a unique atmosphere that's hard to forget. Great selection this week 🤗

Ah, The Stranglers.

I'm collecting all these feelings for you Put them in a box in a darkened room And seal the lid with an industry standard glue

This ain't 'Golden Brown,' but my heart is in awe of how singers and bands wrote songs in the past ..and why iz that people don't make good music like this these days?

The 'Golden Brown' lyrics are interesting too, and you were right. I kinda feel a different sort of emotions with the different versions. We may have different interpretations when it comes to music, and what? 30 versions? Insane!!

All the versions are worth listening to. Thanks for the great music this week!
