Tevion

Hello, everyone! πŸ“· 😎

Last week a friend of mine, who I hadn't seen for a while, surprised me when he came to visit and brought me something. Just what?

I discovered quite a while ago that he has a portable scanner for scanning slides and photos. I asked him if he would lend it to me. Of course, he said, no problem. And a couple of years passed :)

So, this device is the Tevion TV 7100 Multiscanner for Slides/Negatives/photos with 5/10Mgpx. Why do I even need this?

When I was in the last grade (8th) of what was then primary school and the first of high school, I went to a photography club. I even had an analog camera, more low-budget than not. I was learning how to take photos. You know, you take pictures on film, then go to the darkroom where you develop the film, expose the photo paper, and so on.

You could do it yourself in black and white, but we usually send it to a photo studio to develop and print in color. Sometimes, if you ask, they will also make slides you could project with a projector.

This one here below is one such slide.

I have about 600 slides from that period, and now it's time to digitize them. I wouldn't have been in a hurry if I hadn't done it before, but let us give it time. I got this machine on loan from a friend; he borrowed it from someone, and so on.

To say something quickly about this device, this Tevion was the Hoffer Stores brand of electronics, and it also sold computers under that brand. Later, Lenovo bought it, I think. This device went on sale twelve years ago. It is a multi-scanner that can scan photographic film, standard-size photographs, and slides.

The device is relatively simple. You can slightly increase/decrease exposure and white balance with a couple of buttons and settings. It has two modes of use: 5Mgpx or 10Mgpx scanning. Mgpx is a megapixel, and 10Mgpx is a 3900x2600 px photo, 96 pixels per inch.

Once the scanning is complete, the files are automatically saved to the SD, XD, MMC, or MS card. However, the device may have difficulties recognizing newer SD cards due to its age. For instance, it failed to acknowledge the 16GB card from my old phone, so I used an older 4GB one instead. Yeah, it's all pretty dusty. I've wiped some of the dust off.

Below is the slide holder, which can be opened, and four slides can be placed inside.

As I mentioned, I have about 600 slides in 6 boxes, with 2 x 50 slides in each box.

The slide holder is then inserted into the device and manually moved forward slide by slide. The LCD display shows which photo is exposed. You can correct it a little, but only a little, and save the file to the card. On the other side, you remove the slide holder and repeat the process.

After the first 20 slides, I noticed that the quality of these images was not good and had a touch of age. Many of the slides had a very red or brownish color to them. I don't remember photographing anything like this. All the slides were in a box and a bag, so nothing was affected by the light. Or does the quality of film deteriorate over the years? These photos were all shot between 1988 and 1991.

And what is the content? It's amateur photography. At that time, I was still learning. I mainly focused on botany (plants and flowers, as I do now), forests, and the local landscape. I wasn't sure what to do with this. I was building up my digital archive. The most practical thing for me to do is to add these photos (good ones) to the LIL - LMAC Image Gallery, Hive's largest public domain image index. We'll see how useful it will be soon.

As you might have guessed, the title image is on one of those slides, and I have yet to process it in Photoshop. And finally, one with a winter touch, a hike to SneΕΎnik 1796 m, winter 1989. It looks vintage already :)

Thank you for your attention!
