Billy F Gibbons - Brown Paper Bag feat. Keith Urban
Billy F. Gibbons, who’s been in the blues scene for over fifty years—in case you don’t know him as the legendary bearded guitarist from ZZ Top (which I can’t even imagine for music lovers)—has released four solo albums to date, in addition to his 15 ZZ Top albums, all of which are highly regarded by blues connoisseurs. Last week, he released a new single, “Brown Paper Bag.” It’s a fuzzy, slinky blues-rock track with a very groovy guitar, a mix of blues and country, fitting for his age (77). It’s not known if this is a preview of a new album.
A Place To Bury Strangers - Time
The song "Time" is the latest single from the loudest American band from Brooklyn, taken from their most recent album Rare And Deadly (which, apparently, was released physically only on vinyl) that came out recently. It sounds like a typical APTBS (A Place To Bury Strangers) track—dark, atmospheric, with a strong emotional charge and a blend of noise and shoegaze energy. The guitar, as is their usual style, is heavily distorted, creating a techno-inspired, minimalist, paranoid atmosphere.
The Afghan Whigs - Jungle Roux
Once again in #newtunes, I’m highlighting The Afghan Whigs, an American band I listened to in the ’90s while exploring new music from the then-alternative label SubPop. Their sound is grunge with soul, mixing roughness and melody, alternative rock with strong R&B influences. The song “Jungle Roux” is a single and a preview of the new album Soft Control, set for release in August. To me, they still sound very fresh and powerful.
All Them Witches - Aethernet
Lately, I’ve been listening to (and sharing on the social media platforms I use) All Them Witches, an American band from Nashville. Their seventh album, House of Mirrors, released at the end of May, is excellent, in my opinion. The song "Aethernet" is the new single from the album—hypnotic, groovy, bluesy, southern psych-rock with a powerful bassline, atmospheric guitar layers, and an organic, ethereal feel.
Greta Van Fleet - Play Your Games
Greta Van Fleet, an American band made up of three brothers and one member from Frankenmuth, Michigan, has released two EPs and three studio albums so far. They have been playing hard rock with blues influences for 12 years. Music critics and fans (including me) compare them to Led Zeppelin, mainly for their high, emotional vocals and great guitar solos. The song "Play Your Games" is their new single, released at the end of May. It’s classic blues rock with a Zeppelin feel, but still fresh and modern.
BABE RAINBOW - POLYMUCALSACCHARIDE
Babe Rainbow hail from Byron Bay, a surfing town in Australia. They’re a new band to me, even though they’ve been performing for 11 years and have released 6 studio albums. Lighthearted neo-psychedelia with surf rock influences. The song “Polymucalsaccharide” is the new lead single from their upcoming seventh album, Acid and Honey, set for release this July. This song kind of kicked off my summer this year :)
Kristin Hersh - Dark Eyed Junco (Official Video)
Kristin Hersh is an American songwriter, singer, and guitarist who has been performing since 1981. She is known for her intense and often vulnerable songwriting style. Among music connoisseurs, she is one of the most respected and influential figures of the 1980s and 1990s alternative/indie scene—a deeply personal, non-commercial, and sincere artist, often compared to Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, and PJ Harvey. “Dark Eyed Junco” is a song from her upcoming twelfth solo album, Sugar on Blackstone, set for release in September. An introspective, melancholic, and atmospheric song with lucid melodies and intricate arrangements.
MorMor featuring Celeste - Like Heaven
MorMor, whose real name is Seth Nyquist, is a Canadian artist, singer, and songwriter from Toronto. He has been performing for a good 10 years and has released several EPs and one studio album to date. He is known for his highly melodic vocals and personal, introspective songs. The song “Like Heaven” is a new single released two weeks ago; it’s a bright, dreamy, and emotional indie-pop track featuring breakbeat, soft piano, melodic guitars, and a beautiful harmony between MorMor’s falsetto and Celeste’s warm vocals.
