It's Music Friday and #newtunes here! A fresh selection of music featuring well-known, lesser-known, and even unknown artists who are trying to get a few minutes of our time. This week, I’m continuing to revisit all kinds of styles and genres that point to new - or old - trends that are making a comeback.
Is there even a future global hit among them? You won't know until you listen :)

A Place To Bury Strangers - Nature Of Your Heart
The American noise-rock/shoegaze/post-punk band A Place To Bury Strangers (APTBS) from New York continues to release singles from their latest rarities album, 'Rare and Deadly', released in early April. The album is a collection of demos, unreleased recordings, and song drafts from the period 2015–2025. The song "Nature Of Your Heart" is impulsive and hypnotic, featuring distorted guitars and a dark atmosphere that blends beauty and horror. The video is based on footage from the film From The Brain That Wouldn't Die.
The Babalooneys - Soup Surfer
The Babalooneys are a young rock band from Quebec, Canada. They’re a new name to me; this is the first time I’ve heard them. Since 2022, they’ve been playing 60s-style instrumental surf rock, featuring melodic guitar riffs, reverb, drums, and tenor saxophone. So far, they’ve released two EPs and their debut album, Late to the Party!, in June 2024. The song “Soup Surfer” is a single and a preview of their new, second studio album, Goin’ For It, which will be released at the end of May this year. A revival of surf rock, which I like.
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Born In The A.D's
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, an Australian rock band from Perth that has been playing since 2014, has been a frequent guest on #newtunes over the past year. Mainly because of their excellent latest, eighth album, Pogo Rodeo, from which they are now releasing singles. The song "Born In The A.D.'s" is a typical track for them, featuring face-melting guitar riffs, powerful drums, garage-psychedelic energy, and humorous, raw lyrics that say that, even though you were born in the present, modern era, you still have a primitive caveman inside you.
City of the Sun - Ciudad del Sol
City of the Sun is an American trio from New York. They’ve been playing since 2011; they started out as street performers, had a singer until 2014, and then switched entirely to an instrumental format. They’re a new band for me - I listened to them for the first time this week. Their sound is a mix of post-rock, flamenco, gypsy jazz, indie rock, American folk, and blues—very cinematic, emotional, and 'world music-style' instrumental rock. They’ve released three studio albums. The song “Ciudad del Sol” is a single from their latest album, Under The Moon, released today. It features a desert-rock and spaghetti-western vibe with intricate guitar work, dynamic percussion, and a subtle sense of journeying through Mexican or desert landscapes.
Drill - Marijuana
Drill, whose real name is Andrej Bučar, is a Slovenian rap/hip-hop artist, MC, lyricist, producer, promoter, and director from Izola. He has been performing since 2002 and as a solo artist since 2010. To date, he has released five albums. The song “Marijuana” is a new single and music video, released four days ago, from his latest album, Momentum. The song is direct, street rap with a strong flow, a trap/hip-hop beat, and autobiographical and hedonistic themes. It talks about marijuana as part of a lifestyle.
Wet Leg - CPR
Wet Leg is a British indie rock band from the Isle of Wight; they’ve been playing since 2019 and have recorded two albums so far. They went viral on TikTok and were nominated for a Brit Award for their 2022 debut album. They’re known for their deadpan humor, sharp lyrics, catchy guitar riffs, and energetic, lively performances. The song "CPR" is from their second album, and the recording is from their performance at the Coachella 2026 festival - it’s energetic and fun, and I believe they’ll climb even higher on the music charts.
Butthole Surfers - Imbuya (Official Video)
Butthole Surfers, the American cult experimental/psychedelic punk band, have, apparently, woken up. After twenty-five years, at the end of June this year, their eighth studio album, After The Astronaut, will be released. The song “Imbuya” is the second single from the upcoming album, psych-sludge, a mix of psychedelic rock, industrial, punk, and abstract guitar chaos. The song is typical of them—chaotic and absurd—to paraphrase guitarist Leary, who says on YouTube:
Imbuya was conceived and produced much like a fart after eating beans. A truly meaningless song. Kinda our thing.
Derby Motoreta's Burrito Kachimba - Gitana - (En directo desde el Teatro Romano de Mérida 8/09/2025)
I already mentioned the Spanish band Derby Motoreta’s Burrito Kachimba in #newtunes about a month ago, when I first listened to them. Flamenco, stoner, Andalusian rock, and psychedelia. A few days ago, I came across another live recording, the song “Gitana,” from their second album 'Hilo Negro' (2021), recorded at the Teatro Romano de Mérida last year, with the video released this past March. Very passionate and dark, with psychedelic elements, flamenco rhythms, a groovy bassline, and incredible energy.
