New Tunes 22.12.2023
Hello music lovers! 🎶
How are you? Everything is calming down here, the Christmas spirit is everywhere, and Christmas carols are coming from every corner. It's probably the same all over Europe and elsewhere. I will not bore you with Christmas songs, you can hear them everywhere else.
For today's #newtunes selection of new songs I didn't go into too much detail, I've chosen songs by artists I don't know and this is the first time I've heard of them (well, except for one :)), most of them are lesser known artists, but that doesn't mean their songs aren't melodic and singable. Maybe one of them will even be a hit shortly. We'll see.
But your support, even just by listening, counts. Maybe something will interest you and you will explore these melodies and sounds in more detail. But if you don't like it, you can skip at any time.
Foggy Mountain Spaceship - Walking On The Moon
That's a new band for me and I don't know much about them other than what I've read in search engines:
Foggy Mountain Spaceship is a trio consisting of all banjo instruments (5-String Banjo, Banjo Bass, Banjo Drums). The band creates psychedelic soundscapes, fun covers, and bluegrass favorites that you didn't know your ears needed.
But I was attracted by the Police's adaptation of Walking On The Moon, which I think is excellent. On their website, they say the future is in the banjo. I like them and I believe I'll hear more about them. I recommend it.
Covet - Lovespell
Covet is an American band from California, active since 2018. New band for me. The driving force of the band and the front-woman is the great guitarist Yvette Young. They play so-called math rock, which has its roots in alternative and indie rock, is based on the music of King Crimson and emphasizes complex rhythmic structures in the music. This is a recording from August this year at the Post.festival in Indianapolis.
Spoon Benders - Rival
Spoon Benders is an American band from Los Angeles, playing since 2019, with three albums released, most recently 'How Things Repeat' in March this year. They have been touring extensively for the last two years, described by music critics as a controlled chaos of guitar psych-rock and compared to Frankie and Witch Fingers. They certainly have an outstanding live show and have been taken on by Audiotree, a Music Discovery Platform. A new band for me, we'll see where it takes them.
KITES - Witch
Kites is an English indie rock band from Newcastle Upon Thyme, England, and has been playing since 2019. They have caught the attention of English music companies with their live shows, although they have not released an album yet, their debut album is due out in February 2024. Their music is described as a kind of post-grunge nostalgia that pushes the boundaries of the genre. The Witch video is supported by the BBC, released a week ago.
Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - White Rabbit (Live)
Molly Tuttle is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Nashville, Texas, also known as a guitar teacher in the bluegrass tradition. She has an extensive discography, both solo and with the band Golden Highway. Her latest album is 'City of Gold' from June this year. This recording, from April this year, is a bluegrass cover Jefferson Airplane's famous White Rabbit. I included it because @qwerrie and I had an engaging discussion about Jefferson Airplane a couple of days ago. I find the arrangement interesting, I hope he will too, and of course everyone else. Otherwise, it's posted on her Bandcamp site, you can download it for $1. Great production and fantastic sound!
Bai Kamara Jr. & The Voodoo Sniffers - Surrounded
This exceptional Belgian musician and vocalist, born in Sierra Leone, is also a new discovery for me. I have to thank @w74 for featuring him in detail in his Jazz-Matinee post, and I'll just use his words:
Soul-jazz blues from the heart of Europe.
The song Surrounded is from the latest album 'Traveling Medicine Man' which was released in March this year and is first-class African-Saharan blues with a soul twist. It's still quite poppy and goes quickly to the ears. I recommend listening to the whole album.
African Head Change - Accra Electronica
African Head Change is a duo, project by cult British electronic music producer Adrian Sherwood and Jamaican percussionist Bon Iyabinghi Noah. The collaboration between the two has been going on for over forty years. A Trip To Bolgatanga is their latest album, released in July this year. It's not a globally popular Afro-beat, but music that brings African percussion to the forefront of dub and reggae styles, which have so far been ignored in these genres.
Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes
And finally Porcupine Tree, the only band I know in this post and have followed since the beginning. I have mentioned it a few times in my music posts. This clip is from their latest album Closure/Continuation.Live and the video/visualiser was posted a week ago. As always, excellent.
🎶That's all for today, enjoy in #newtunes! I hope you liked something, and thank you for your attention.
This is my last #newtunes post of the year, and I'm going to spend the rest of the year listening to all the music I come across. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🔔❄️🎄🍺🥤
