Field Update - The End Of A Season

Hello, everyone interested in gardening! πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

My last post was three months ago. Even then, I had practically finished the annual vegetables, and we had already harvested most of what had grown.

Well, there is still some left, and now is the last time to mention it; probably the most noteworthy is that I participated in the Hive World Pumpkin Championship hosted by @hive-world-champ. This may also interest @der-prophet, @beeber, @zekepickleman, and @solymi, who are also active in gardening.

In the photo above, you can see the weeds that have almost completely covered my field. There is lots of moisture and heat, but the cultivated plants are no longer growing; they are just weeds. I have mowed everything down several times, but the weeds persist.

If I look back briefly, there was a drought initially, extreme rains in the first half of the summer, a massive drought in August, and a month or so of rain and humidity again. There were few crops, about half as many as last year, and I was most disappointed with the potatoes. Well, all this is described in my previous posts.

But am I happy with that? I must be. I have been away for the last two months, and we haven't done much with the field, so it is all overgrown with weeds. But there were enough vegetables for us in the summer, and we didn't have to buy any.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

My wife decided (without asking me 😠) to pick almost all the pumpkins two weeks ago. Six butternut squash and one hokkaido.

There are four left in the field, but they are small, and I don't think they will grow anymore. There are two butternut squash, and one is still green.

πŸŽƒπŸŽƒ πŸŽƒ

One more little Hokkaido persists.

This one is the only decorative pumpkin. I expected it to be bigger and to light up the balcony for Halloween, but it won't because it's only 10 centimeters across, so it's a miniature.

In short, my crop is 11 pumpkins, and they are all relatively small. Two years ago, I had a lot more, even one colossal muscadine that weighed about 6 kilograms. I hope next year will be better.

But what now? Now we have some winter vegetables planted, some leafy kale,

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

Some of the broccoli we cut in the summer is growing new again,

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

We even grew two Chayotes, or prickly pumpkins here or choko. Maybe I could count this one because it's also supposedly a pumpkin family member? πŸ€”

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

And we've planted a new winter lettuce - we call it andivia - and some chicory.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

But the work in the field is far from over. I hope for some dry weather to cut all these weeds again and clean the field for next year.

This will be a new challenge and beginning because, with nature, you never know how it will end.

Thank you for your attention!

Great gardening update. It does drive me mad battling with weeds!!! I can't wait to see how your field progresses, there are always new vegetables and crops to be had! Once my kids are a bit bigger, hopefully I can get myself a garden for growing too!

It is nice to see that the β€œcurly kale” from northern Germany is spreading its leaves in Slovenia as well. When it comes to preparing it, you need to remember that it needs to be treated slightly different from β€œour” Savoy cabbage. But as a talented hobby cook, you will surely find the right recipe.πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‰

Inspite of the weeds you have a somewhat good harvest, I mean the potatoes, pumpkins and other vegetables. I hope you are able to deal with the stubborn weeds however you can and hopefully also the plants in your gardens presently will thrive and yield abundantly. Thanks for writing and have a great day.

Leafy kale looks very fresh and grows very well with strong, deep green leaves.

very interesting how your garden has developed.

now you just have to select your pumpkins for the three categories and write a post about them.
